The Design Process

The First Meeting - The design process begins with an informal design consult. During this first meeting we'll have a detailed discussion about what you would like to do with your site/garden, as well as a walk through so you can show me your property and areas you want me to design.

I will observe and record your site conditions (e.g., sunlight, any drainage or erosion problems, existing vegetation, structures and utilities.) I will also take photos of your site.

At the end of our meeting, I'lll give you some design ideas, a rough sketch of your property, and recommendations for plants that will work in your garden.

The Landscape Design Questionnaire - Before our meeting I will ask you to complete a design questionnaire. This gives you an opportunity to share your garden design ideas. You can tell me what landscapes you like or dislike including plant preferences. I’ll ask you to include any garden goals, problems with your site, design budget, and garden maintenance issues. You can include any special garden you might have in mind:

The Formal Design Plan - After our first meeting, if you would like me to create a formal design plan we will schedule a second visit so I can measure your property and analyze your site. I will then create a concept plan, a preliminary design (to scale), and planting plan. We will meet again so you can review this plan. After your feedback, if you approve of the plan, I'll turn the preliminary plan into a final copy. This will include a detailed planting list.caterpiller

Installation - Once the design process is completed and you have the master plan, you may choose to do the installation yourself or I can give you referrals for the installation. If your design requires hard structures (I design some hard elements, i.e., paths, walkways, patios, and retaining walls) I can give you referrals for that work. The plans can be implemented in stages or all at once, depending on your preference and budget.
